This Gorgeous River In Alaska Is Picture Perfect For A Relaxing Canoe Trip
Spending a lazy afternoon floating down a peaceful river in a canoe is an ancient Alaskan pastime. Nowhere is more perfect for a canoe trip than the Chena River. Take Chena Hot Springs Road to the north from Fairbanks to the second river bridge and pull out at the first river bridge for a 3 mile float that’s a slice of heaven. The wild Alaskan forest bumps right into the shore, unless a clear sandbar provides a place to lounge in the sun. You’ll love your relaxing canoe trip down the Chena River. Don’t forget your bug spray, sunscreen and a lifejacket!
The Chena River is composed of runoff from the White Mountains, clear and cold. The various forks combine to form a small and relatively peaceful river near Fairbanks in the interior.
Drive east out of Fairbanks on Chena Hot Springs Road until you reach the 2nd Bridge at 39.5 miles. There are many possible float itineraries, but this one is the easiest and shortest.
The float is three miles down to the First Bridge at 37.8 mile. This should be a pleasant float and a day trip. Start early and plan to be home that night.
The river is relatively wide, smooth and unobstructed during this stretch. Always watch for sweepers (tress along the edge that can pull you under), rocks and shallow spots.
You can always hire a guide for the day to escort you if you feel unsafe canoeing alone. There are several places to rent canoes and guides in nearby Fairbanks.
There are some small rapids on the Chena, but a standard canoe should be fine. Make sure at least one person in your group is an expert at canoeing and knows the river.
As long as you have your life jacket on and one person is keeping a watchful eye, go ahead... kick back and relax. The float isn't very stressful in this region of the river.
