Seldovia, Alaska is a charming little coastal town on the Kenai Peninsula that is just a boat ride away from Homer, the 'halibut fishing capital of the world'. Visitors can hop on the ferry, charter a boat, take a personal boat or even a float plane over to this happy little spot. It is not located on the road system so access via boat or plane are the only ways that you will find yourself in this tranquil piece of paradise.
The year-round population in Seldovia is roughly about 300 residents. In the summertime the population explodes as visitors from all around Alaska (and the world) journey to this cute little town to enjoy epic world-class fishing, delicious restaurants, fun shopping spots and other awesome outdoor activities.
Fishing the waters surrounding Seldovia is always a blast. If you can handle the motion of the ocean, head out for a day on the salt and don't be surprised if you break a sweat reeling in a halibut that weighs as much as you!
The fishing-town influence is very apparent when walking through the town. You'll find bright colored buoys and lots of fun ocean related accents everywhere you turn.
Even the grocery store in town has an adorable 'charming coastal town' vibe. As you can see, the attention to detail is utterly perfected in this special place.
The local wood carvings around town make for perfect photo-ops. It's really neat to see how these carvings represent both Alaska native culture as well as the marine wildlife that can be found in the surrounding waters.
One of the things that we love the most about Alaska is that even in the heart of the summer, you can find a secluded beach somewhere to put your toes in the sand. When you're in Seldovia it will be hard to resist the serene silence with nothing but the sound of waves crashing against the shore.
Hiking around Seldovia is truly magical. Check out the slough or head across Otter Bahn for a lovely afternoon filled with stunning vistas. The Rocky Ridge Trail is one of the most popular hikes in the area and it is a must-do for anyone that has a couple hours to spend enjoying nature.
And of course, Seldovia wouldn't be a true coastal community without stunning sunsets. Nothing beats the feeling of cool night air and bright, brilliant colors paining the sky. Only in Seldovia will you really see this magic play out right before your very eyes!
