Russian Jack Springs Park is named for a Russian emigrant who arrived in Anchorage in 1915 named Jacob Marunenk, familiarly "Russian Jack."

He homesteaded the area with friends and built a cabin located between the natural spring and the present-day chalet. The entire area because known as Russian Jack Springs.
