With the majority of the population in the last frontier living in Anchorage, it’s a pretty magical thing to have a convenient beach escape right within city limits. If you need to escape the traffic noise and the hustle and bustle of the rat race, you are always in luck with this stunning beach gem. This special spot is located within 15-20 minutes from just about everywhere in the city. It is convenient, easily accessible and it truly does offer something for everyone.
Break a sweat on the nearby trails, bring the kiddos to the beach, soak in a glorious sunset, enjoy epic photo opportunities overlooking a plethora of mountains or fuel your need for a good adrenaline rush at the sand dunes. There is no way that you won’t fall in love with Kincaid Beach.
From downtown, hop on the Tony Knowles Coastal trail and head southwest towards the massive 1,516-acre Kincaid Park. This incredible park, which is home to the only beach within Anchorage city limits, is surrounded by the Turnagain arm on the south and the Knik Arm the west. So as you can only imagine, this sights to be seen at the special spot are truly breathtaking.
Another beautiful sight to behold here is Sleeping Lady mountain in the distance. On a clear day you get the most perfect colossal view in the distance. Kincaid Beach at Kincaid Park is a perfect place to head after work to let the dogs run free and enjoy a little secluded slice of Alaska within city limits.
Because the tide comes in and a couple of times each day, you will get more rocks and mud-flats up close to the ocean. With that being said, be prepared to wash plenty of sand and silt off of shoes (and paws) at the end of the day.
A great way to enjoy the beach terrain is fat-tire biking. Many locals (and visitors alike) do this fun adventure sport all year long at Kincaid Beach. You will be assured a great workout and some pretty breathtaking views while you're working up a sweat.
And finally, if a sandy beach is what you're after - don't worry, you're in luck! The sand dunes at Kincaid Park are an absolute blast. Take off your shoes and enjoy the soft sand and a relaxing picnic with friends. Or if you have a need for speed you can head to the other side of the dunes and enjoy awesome dirt bike areas.
As with just about everywhere else in the great 49th state, always be cautious of wildlife in the area. Chances are that if we love this area then the wildlife probably will too. But really, how cool is it that we get to share our best playgrounds with beautiful wildlife? It's pretty awesome and it definitely makes for some extraordinary 'Only in Alaska' moments!
As always, we've saved the best for last. The greatest news of all is that you can actually enjoy this special area all year long! Even in the wintertime when the mud-flats are covered with snow and there are big chunks of frozen ice, it's still a magical place to enjoy. For a convenient escape from the city lights and the overwhelming rat-race, heading to Kincaid Beach will completely revive your soul.
