If you’re interested in getting up close and personal with some of Alaska’s most interesting wildlife, check out this grizzly bear tour on Chichagof Island! Cruise around the island with your own personal guide while scoping out grizzly bears on the hunt for some tasty salmon.
Chichagof Island is a stunning little island in the Alaskan panhandle.
With a landmass of over 75 miles long and 50 miles wide, it is actually the fifth largest island in the United States of America. It also has the highest population of bears per square mile of anywhere else on Earth!
The lovely small town of Hoonah is located on the northern part of the island.
This is where your tour will start from! Hoonah Travel Adventures is a small, Alaskan and family owned tour company. The majority of the island is not populated by anything but bears!
You'll go on a three hour tour is a small van with your personal guide to tell you about the island and some facts about the wildlife that inhabit it.
This makes it a fantastic tour for families! They are small tours, with a maximum of twelve people. That means plenty of opportunity to stop for any bears you see nearby!
The area is absolutely teeming with bears, and your guide knows all of the best spots to see them.
One of the best places you can run into a bear is by the rivers where the salmon run. They are fishing and fattening up for the coming winter, so you have a great opportunity to not just see them, but watch them swim and fish!
On your tour you can run into mama bears and her cubs, or large, solo traveling male bears.
You may see a group of juveniles exploring their first summer on their own. It's a thrill to see how these bears live on this wilderness filled island!
And you won't just see bears! The island is teeming with all sorts of wildlife.
You have a great chance of spotting seabirds, ducks, beavers, and Martens. Or even Sitka black-tailed deer, or the magnificent bald eagle. Whatever you spot will be amazing, and the adventure is truly the best way to explore this island!
The tour is only offered May through September, as your likelihood of seeing bears drops outside of those dates.
Children ages 5-12 are $99.00 per person, and adults start at $109.00 per person. You will meet at Icy Straight Point Excursions Hub at their Address: 108 Cannery Road, Hoonah, AK 99829.
