The 8 Best Free Things You Can Possibly Do In Alaska This Summer
Alaska has tons of amazing things to do all year long. But many of them can get pretty expensive, very quickly. While helicopter rides touring glaciers and cute little remote inns are fun ways to spend your hard earned cash, there are many fabulous free things to enjoy. Here are eight great free things to do in Alaska this summer!
1. Stop At A Visitor’s Center
Almost every larger town in the state has some sort of visitor center to welcome those passing through. With so many cool things to learn about Alaska, these visitor centers offer a ton of interesting information about lots of different things, including marine life, National Parks, wildlife, and more!
2. Camp In The Backcountry
Backcountry camping in Alaska is an incredible experience that requires no campsite fee, and the views are outrageously beautiful. You can backcountry camp almost everywhere in Alaska on public lands, and it requires nothing but time, a tent, and an appreciation of the outdoors.
3. Packraft A River
With 12,000 rivers in this beautiful state, you’ll be hard pressed not to find one you love! Grab your pack raft and float down a lazy river, or hold on tight and find some whitewater. Alaska has both, and pack rafts are a perfect, free way to explore Alaska's beautiful waters.
4. Hike A Mountain
There are countless mountain ranges to choose from in Alaska, and you can find stellar hiking all over the state. Take advantage of the proximity to some of the most gorgeous summits in the world, and grab a friend to get on out there!
5. Bike Ride The Trails
Whether you’re hitting a paved trail like the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail or some of the most epic single track runs in North America, biking Alaska is an excellent way to spend the afternoon- or summer! Check your local area’s bike maps to see some of the great trails nearby.
6. Kayak A Lake
It’s hard to get over how stunning the lakes are here in this great state. Many of them are glacier blue and filled with some of the most spectacular fish you’ve ever seen. Take a kayak out on your favorite lake to slow life down and enjoy the peace you’ll find on the waters.
7. Swim In The Ocean
Alaskans are nothing if not hardy! On one of those hot days go ahead and take a refreshing dip in our chilly ocean waters. While most of our beaches are rocky, and the waters bracing, it’s still one of the best ways to enjoy a summer’s day with friends!
8. Go On A Road Trip
Alaska has less than 5,000 miles of paved road. That means around only 30% of all roads in Alaska are paved. However, those paved roads will take you to some of the prettiest scenery in the world. And if you have four wheel drive, who needs paved? Check out the Dalton Highway or McCarthy Road for some gravel filled adventures!
