Being that Alaska is the largest state in the nation, it’s not too much of a surprise to learn that there are tons of hidden gems tucked away throughout every different region. This one slice of heaven in particular is unique in that it offers just about every activity under the sun, plus it is totally accessible to Alaska’s largest and most populated city. If you haven’t already made the journey up the winding road to Eklutna Lake, you’ll be dying to do so after reading this article. Located in the 495,000-acre Chugach State Park (one of the four largest state parks in the entire United States) is this little slice of heaven known as Eklutna Lake. Located just about an hour from Anchorage, this spot is perfectly secluded yet totally accessible to Alaska's largest city.
Locals and visitors alike come here to enjoy a day trip or an overnight camping expereince. The campground itself has 50 campsites with 15 overflow spots. In the summertime you will see lots of families, kids and dogs enjoying all of the outdoor splendor that this special place offers. The most popular activities include hiking, biking, horseback riding, climbing, picnicking, fishing, boating, and riding ATV's (which you can only do on limited days from April - November). The Twin Peaks Trail which is just 2.5 miles (one way) takes you high above the stunning lake to give you the most breathtaking aerial view. It is relatively strait up hill so be prepared to climb and be sure to pack lots of water and a snack to enjoy and re-fuel with at the top.
In addition to hiking or running on these beautiful trails, another popular activity here is mountain biking. Cover more ground in a quicker amount of time by taking advantage of these very well maintained trails.
To get here, make your way up to to mile 12 of the Eklutna Lakeside trail. Stay overnight in the state cabin or simply go in for the day and come back out that same night.
Experience nature at it's finest with utter serenity and nothing but the sounds of the rushing glacial water jetting down the creek in the distance. If refreshing your soul is what you're after, you are sure to accomplish that goal in this special spot.
A very popular activity on Eklutna Lake is kayaking and boating. Boats without motors are allowed on the lake which help you get out into the middle of the crystal blue, turquoise paradise.
Although this special place is fun and beautiful to visit any time of the year, the autumn months offer a spectacular amount brilliant colors on the mountain side. Winter activities include cross-country skiing, dog mushing, wildlife viewing, snowshoeing and snow-machining.
