We’ve gathered up a few of our favorites that are great, whether you’re looking to get away simply for an afternoon or spend an entire weekend there. You’ll definitely want to add all these spots to your Cotton State bucket list!

1. Mentone

Mentone is located in DeKalb County. It's a tiny town that's situated right atop Lookout Mountain. Tucked away in the northeast corner of the state, this area is part of the southern end of the Appalachian foothills and it's such a gorgeous region. There is so much beautiful natural scenery here, and the breathtaking views will have you wanting to return again and again. Mentone is also home to a variety of cozy bed and breakfasts, wonderful restaurants, and several unique shops. With under 500 residents, this is one of the smaller towns in Alabama, but it's definitely worth a visit.
2. Fairhope

Fairhope is located on the eastern shore of Mobile Bay in Baldwin County. This lovely town is home to several spacious parks, beautiful tree-lined neighborhoods, and a wonderful downtown area. You'll find plenty of shops and restaurants to check out here: it's such a quintessential small Southern town, and has even been officially recognized as such!
3. Monroeville

Monroeville is known as the "Literary Capital of Alabama," and it's also the county seat of Monroe County. Its nickname derives from the fact that it's the hometown of several award-winning writers. Harper Lee, Truman Capote, Cynthia Tucker, and more all called this place home. The town's main attraction is the Old Monroe County Courthouse, which features the courtroom that was modeled in the film version of Lee's "To Kill A Mockingbird."

Magnolia Springs is a beautiful town that's in Baldwin County. It's right at the headwaters of the Magnolia River and has some of the most scenic drives in Alabama. Interestingly, it's home to the only water mail delivery route in the United States! Magnolia Springs features gorgeous scenery, a cozy bed and breakfast, and some wonderful options for dining.
5. Fort Payne

Fort Payne is the county seat of DeKalb County. The town's main attraction is the Little River Canyon National Preserve. Many consider this place to be the most beautiful spot in Alabama: it's home to both Little River Canyon and Little River Falls. Fort Payne also features a wonderful downtown area that offers several antique shops and restaurants. Music fans will delight in a visit to the Alabama Fan Club and Museum, which is all about the band that shares our state's name.
6. Mooresville

If you love Alabama history, a visit to Mooresville is an absolute must! This tiny town has under 100 residents and was incorporated back in 1818. What makes Mooresville so special is that the entire town is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It's home to the state's oldest operational post office, built in 1840. This tiny town may not have a ton to do, but since it's located right outside of Huntsville, you can find endless opportunities for fun in the area.
7. Eufaula

Eufaula is a charming small town in Barbour County that's one of the best day trip destinations in Alabama thanks to its incredible natural beauty. It's situated right on a bluff and overlooks Lake Eufaula - one of the South's top fishing destinations, if you feel up for casting a line! Besides the beautiful Lake, Eufaula has plenty more to offer visitors, including a variety of stores and restaurants.

We love small towns in Alabama because they tend to have great local businesses to support and it's nice to get out of the hustle and bustle of the big city sometimes. There's also such a great element of small-town charm and peace and quiet in small towns. One of our favorites that we didn't mention on the list above is Childersburg. It's located just half an hour from Birmingham and it's actually possibly the oldest city in America, dating back to 1540!

Wetumpka is a small town with under 8,000 residents, but it's got some great restaurants! It's filled with a diverse array of options for dining. One of our favorites is Must Stop Cafe: the name is definitely true, as this is a must-stop place if you're in the area! It serves up delicious home-cooked food.

What are some of the best day trips in Alabama?

There are so many great day trips in Alabama, no matter where your interests lie. Do you enjoy exploring our many quaint small towns? Are you a fan of history? How about our amazing natural wonders?
