One of the best overlook views in the entire state of Alabama is located just a few minutes away from the center of Birmingham. Ruffner Mountain Nature Preserve is a suburban park only nine miles from downtown Birmingham. As the name suggests, the preserve protects over 1,000 acres of wilderness on Ruffner Mountain and the spectacular views therein. The best view is from the Hawk’s View overlook, which features rolling hills, wooded city streets, and downtown Birmingham’s high rises from afar.

Ruffner Mountain Nature Preserve is a non-profit organization with zero funding coming from the federal, state, or local levels. There is a $5 parking fee that goes toward the maintenance and operation of the park. You can learn more about hours of operation, trails, and programs on the preserve’s website.
