Even the most remote small town in Alabama, Eufaula, has all of that and then some. Located in the southeastern corner of Alabama not far from Georgia, it’s considered the most remote because of its distance from the next nearest city.

The park is located about 10 miles north of downtown Eufaula and other city attractions, which gives you an even more "away from it all" enclave.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, these days this 1,200-square-foot structure is a thoughtfully renovated, two-bath, one-bedroom retreat that does bookings of a different sort.

While you're downtown, consider a morning stroll on Yoholo Micco, The Creek Indian Trail, which begins on East Broad Street and cuts north to northeast. The fully paved, 4.3-mile out-and-back trail is popular with locals for walking, running, and biking.

The driving route will take you through uplands and wetlands and has several platforms and an observation tower along the way to see the wildlife and their habitats.
Hot tip: The driving option keeps your trip the most relaxing by allowing you to admire the wildlife from afar. This is optimal considering one of the refuge's featured species is the American alligator.

Eufaula hosts the largest and oldest tour of historic homes every spring called Eufaula Pilgrimage. If you aren't visiting during that time, a few stops you can visit year round, including the Shorter Mansion.

The Eufaula Heritage Association owns and operates the 1906 Classical Revival style home and allows visitors for a small fee Mondays through Saturdays unless there is a special event.
An even older home that is typically open for tours is Fendall Hall, a stunning Italianate structure built in 1860. The property covers five acres that include beautiful gardens.

The same policy applies at Fendall Hall in that it is occasionally closed for special events, so it's best to call ahead before visiting.
