Like most other towns, Foley, Alabama has a secret place that not many people know about. Of course, if you’re a local, you’ve probably heard about this secret place a time or two. If you’re not a local, you may have heard about it, but you’re not sure if it truly exists. Well, this place does exist and it’s known as the Foley Tunnel, a secret tunnel in Alabama.
The Foley Tunnel is a secret passageway that's approximately six feet below Foley's old downtown area. It was originally built to connect The Hotel Magnolia and the Gulf Telephone Company.
A prominent resident that went by the name of John Snook owned both of these successful businesses. He built this tunnel so he could easily go back and forth to each of the businesses no matter the weather conditions. This tunnel was especially helpful during hurricane season.
At the time of the tunnel's construction, the Korean War was taking place. Mr. Snook (pictured) was afraid the Soviet Union was going to attack the Gulf Coast, so this is yet another reason why he decided to build this tunnel.
One of the most amazing discoveries made during the tunnel's construction was a Civil War-era cannonball. John and his wife, Marjorie, couldn't believe their eyes the moment they saw it. They carefully dug it out and put in on display at the hotel.
