As its name suggests, Double Springs was named after two springs that flowed side by side. During the 1940s, State Highway 195 was built, and it now covers the pair of springs. The hidden springs still flow underneath the highway.
Double Springs is actually situated within the borders of the William B. Bankhead National Forest, which is often referred to as "Bankhead" or "Bankhead National Forest." This national forest is one of the Southeast's top hiking destinations.
The William B. Bankhead National Forest is well known for its beautiful natural scenery, especially its collection of waterfalls. Interestingly, the forest's Sipsey Wilderness area is known as the "Land of 1,000 Waterfalls." A popular waterfall in the Double Springs area of the forest is Upper Caney Creek Falls, which has a 20-foot drop.

Located in Houston, Alabama, this jail, which is believed to have been built in 1868, is the only known log jail in Alabama that's still standing today. It's also one of the few surviving log jails in the United States. An interesting fact about Houston, Alabama is that it was the original seat of Winston County before Double Springs became the county seat in 1884.
