Alabama is full of natural beauty, and all of our state parks deserve your attention. Cathedral Caverns State Park in Woodville, however, will give you an unforgettable experience like none other. Here are a few reasons why you should jump in the car and visit this park as soon as possible:
From the moment you step into the caverns, you will be blown away. The huge entrance is one of the largest in the world for commercial caves, at 25 feet high and 126 feet wide.
Inside, you can cool off in the 60-degree caverns and observe some of the most impressive natural features on the planet, like the "frozen waterfall" and a huge "stalagmite forest."
One feature, appropriately named "Goliath," is 45 feet tall and has a circumference of 243 feet, making it one of the largest stalagmites in the world.
The caves were a local attraction for decades, starting in the 1950s until they were sold in the 1970s. They were reopened as a state park in 2000. The caves have a long and fascinating history. During the Civil War, a family even lived in the caverns after their home was burned down by Union soldiers.
Tours are given year-round, but from March 15th to August 31st, tour times are as follows:
10:15 a.m., 11:15 a.m., 12:15 p.m., 1:15 p.m., 2:15 p.m., 3:15 p.m. and 4:00 p.m..
