This often overlooked Missouri town may not have the hustle and bustle of a big city but you certainly won’t run out of activities during a weekend visit. History lovers, wine connoisseurs, foodies, and nature enthusiasts can all find something to love in Missouri’s oldest town, Sainte Genevieve. Visit Ste. Genevieve this summer for a fun filled weekend in a quiet little river town.
Ste. Genevieve was established in the late 1700's by French-Canadian fur traders traveling along the Mississippi River. The river is still an essential aspect to this small town. Many visitors have come to Ste. Genevieve via the ferry that connects the town to Southern Illinois.
Ste. Genevieve has a unique culture that is credited to it's early residents. The french influences are still very prevalent today in the names of streets, buildings, and families. Many German immigrants also settled in this area after the Louisiana Purchase. They are credited with creating the vineyards that still produce award winning wines in Ste. Genevieve. The Cave Vineyard is one of Ste. Genevieve's most unique attractions. Taste their fine wine and enjoy your selection's in the cave directly beneath the tasting room. Be sure to get some treats from the large biscotti bar!
Chaumette Vineyards and Winery is one of Ste. Genevieve's more popular attractions. Known for great tasting wines, amazing views, romantic villas and delicious meals you won't regret visiting Chaumette. Established in 1990, this 310 acre property is a perfect destination to help you let go of your weekday stress.
Looking for a place to dine in town? The Old Brick House Restaurant is the oldest brick building west of the Mississippi River. In addition to it's rich history, it s also a fantastic place for drinks and dinner. Try the home-style fried chicken dinner or a juicy, tender steak.
Sweet Things Sweet Shop is adored by kids and adults. Find old time classics like buckeyes, fudge, and toffee. They even have a wide variety of sugar free options.
Animals lovers will surely enjoy visiting Crown Ridge Tiger Sanctuary. The sanctuary is a non profit big cat rescue and educational facility that provides permanent lifelong care for abused, neglected or unwanted big cats. They currently care for four tigers and one female lion. You can visit the sanctuary and participate in general tours, feeding tours, and educational tours for school groups or scouts. You can even stay onsite in one of their nine luxurious lodging options.
There are also many state parks and conservation areas in and around Ste. Genevieve. Hawn State Park is considered one for Missouri's most beautiful state parks.
