In 1850, over half of St. Louis residents were of German descent. During this boom in German immigration, St. Louis’ most famous family arrived to start their empire. Adolphus Busch came to St. Louis with his brothers in 1857 and married Lilly Anheuser in 1861. With his father-in law, Eberhard Anheuser, Busch founded the Anheuser-Busch brewing company in 1879. Adolphus’ son, August Busch Sr., took over the company after his father’s death in 1913. Busch Sr. decided that he needed a place to stop and rest on his 15 mile journey home from the brewery. So, in 1917 the Bevo Mill was erected.
