But, the Waldo Emerson Inn in Kennebunk comes with a history that was surprising to us – it was built by the family of the American author!

It has had many famous owners over the years and still holds much of its original charm.
The house was originally built in 1753 by the great uncle of Ralph Waldo Emerson.

He made his career from building clipper ships on the Kennebunk River directly behind the house.
It was eventually inherited by Theodore Lyman when he married Waldo Emerson's daughter.

Lyman added onto the house in 1784 and gifted the larger home to his second wife.
However, our favorite thing about the inn is its rich Underground Railroad history.
