The police of Hiawatha, Iowa experienced a truly unusual and tragic series of events this month. Little did they know that following the bizarre behavior of a naked man would lead to the investigation of Deb Roman’s death. It was not even 9:00 a.m. on the morning of Friday, December 2nd when police discovered Joseph Hubbard, 32, wandering naked near the 700 block of North Center Point Road.
This case would be bizarre enough for the quiet town of Hiawatha, which is located just north of Cedar Rapids. But what followed just 30 minutes later has prompted a much more serious investigation of the police department.

Mr. Hubbard's unusual behavior prompted a welfare check at Hubbard’s residency, 213 Sunset Lane. Upon arrival, police discovered the body of Deborah Roman, 56, who was Hubbard’s mother. No one else was discovered at the home, and neighbors were shocked upon hearing what had happened.

Despite Hubbard’s unusual behavior nearing the hour of this discovery, he has not yet been associated with his mother’s death.
What is clear, and perhaps even more baffling, is that Joseph Hubbard intended to cause serious damage to the nearby New Beginnings Church.
According to authorities, it was here that he took off his clothes and then doused them in gasoline in the church’s shed. Before he could cause serious damage, Mr. Hubbard was caught and was unable to set fire to the church.
Hubbard is currently in custody with charges of 2nd degree arson and 3rd degree burglary. He has no prior criminal record.

The incident is still under heavy investigation, and has left both family members and citizens of Hiawatha devastated and baffled. It may just be one of the most puzzling crime investigations this friendly Iowa town has seen.
