In fact, if you’ve braved these months you could say that you’ve experienced some of the coldest temperatures in America. Scientifically speaking, this is isn’t even an exaggeration. According to a recent study which sought to locate the top 25 coldest cities in the country, Idaho Falls came it at #16. Here’s more on what makes winter in Idaho so frigid.
Come winter time, Idaho transforms into something of a winter wonderland. Towns are covered in a soft blanket of snow and the mountains seem even more majestic than usual. But there’s another aspect of winter that is impossible to ignore: the cold.

For a combination of factors, the state of Idaho experiences one of the coldest winters in the entire country. For year-round temperature averages, it ranks in the top 10, just following Wisconsin and New Hampshire.

A study done to locate the 25 coldest cities in America named Idaho Falls as #16, with an average low temperature of a biting 16 degrees F. The lowest temperature ever recorded in Idaho occurred in 1943, when Island Park Dam experienced a bone chilling -60 degrees F.
In addition to chilly temperatures, the bounty of snowfall is another trademark of a true Idaho winter. Each year, Idaho gets an average of 29 inches per year, with the national average being about 25 inches. Areas in central Idaho receive the heaviest amount of snowfall each year.
Even more surprising is the fact that Idaho’s summers are also considered relatively chilly. Summer months in Idaho are the third coolest in the country, following Alaska and Wyoming. Of course, this accounts for the mild temperatures that make summers in the Gem State so uniquely beautiful.
