I was born and raised in sunny Southern California and will never tire of the West Coast, although I spent several years living in Southeast Asia, about as far from California as you can get. Going out to eat is a pretty universal experience. We have all been to a restaurant, whether it’s a simple drive-thru, fine dining establishment, or longstanding local landmark. Traditionally, a certain amount of money is exchanged for a certain kind of food. But one restaurant, Big Big Table Community Café in New York, is pioneering a whole new concept of dining out that is deeply rooted in serving the community, and it is making an impact in more ways than one.

Big Big Table began when Mandy Bailey found herself fraught with concern about serious issues of food waste and hunger in the community, and was inspired to act.
Bailey founded the restaurant as a place that would tackle both issues head-on, reducing food waste and offering a dignified solution to hunger.
Community and Operations Director Maddie Collins explains the clear mission of Big Big Table: "To offer affordable, accessible, nutritious (and delicious) lunches to our community. We believe that everyone deserves access to good food, regardless of their financial situation."
Rather than a straightforward money-for-food exchange, the cafe operates on an innovative and inclusive pay-as-you-can model, emphasizing that everybody has something they can contribute.
Those who come to Big Big Table are invited to contribute in various ways in exchange for meals. Some pay with monetary donations. Others donate their time, from completing a single task at the cafe to working regular shifts. Still others donate items such as fresh produce and pantry goods.
The efforts of this business go far beyond providing healthy, fresh-cooked meals. Food and ingredients are sourced through food rescue and donations, minimizing food waste and maximizing resources.
This, of course, requires the talented kitchen team to be creative in creating meals for the daily menu, each of which is a true testament to Big Big Table’s commitment to sustainability and supporting the community.
The success of this business is attributed to several factors which include a hard-working, collaborative, and dedicated staff and board, generous partners such as local farmers and businesses, and the incredible support received from the community.
Countless volunteers give of their time and energy in support of Big Big Table’s mission to make a positive impact on both the physical and mental well-being of those it serves.
In her role, Collins told us that she loves the profound sense of connection to the community and the community’s fervent embrace of what the restaurant offers: "a beacon of warmth, nourishment, and inclusivity for all who walk through our doors."
Community is certainly at the heart of everything this business is doing, creating a place where individuals are able to get what they need and actively participate in supporting others, resulting in a real sense of belonging and connection.
