A Work Of Art: New Mexico's Stunning Landscape

As someone who studied art history in college and even took a photography class trip to the Land of Enchantment, I can fully understand why numerous artists have found inspiration here. Georgia O’Keeffe was one such artist who found great inspiration in New Mexico’s stunning landscape. The subjects of many of her paintings included the vast landscapes and natural wonders this state is known for, including Pedernal Mountain.

Georgia O'Keeffe had a great love for the state of New Mexico. Upon her first visit in 1917, she became captivated by the landscape and felt incredibly inspired by it. Eventually, in 1949, she moved to New Mexico permanently.

While she was, and still is, best known for her flower paintings, she also used many places around the Land of Enchantment as subjects for her work.

Among the parts of New Mexico she painted include Abiquiu Lake and Cerro Pedernal (Pedernal Mountain). Located a mere 50 miles from Santa Fe, O'Keeffe would often travel to Abiquiu for inspiration.

Located within the Jemez Mountains, Pedernal Mountain is a mesa located just south of Abiquiu Lake. It's flat top is quite noticeable from afar.

Georgia O'Keefe would spend summers at nearby Ghost Ranch with views of Pedernal Mountain. Its captivating beauty would inspire her art.

Painted several times by O'Keeffe, Pedernal Mountain eventually became a famous natural landmark in New Mexico. And if you ever get to see it in person, you'll probably experience as much awe as O'Keeffe did when she was here.
