Filled with history, culture, and some of the most amazing food, small towns in the south can’t be beat. And we’re not the only ones that think so. The travel and leisure site Pure Wow recently released a list of the “Cutest Small Towns In The South,” searching for places that possess that irresistible small town charm. Overall, the site selected 14 cities and Natchez just so happened to be one of them.
Natchez is located on the Mississippi River. The city’s waterfront locale is one of its greatest assets. Amazing views of the Mighty Mississippi can be taken in from several places in the city.
The Riverfront Trail is a great way to get both panoramic and close-up views of the Mississippi River. Divided into three tiers, this one-of-a-kind trail starts at the historic bluff and follows a nearly vertical 200' descent down to the riverbank below.

Impressive views of the Mississippi River can also be taken in from Natchez’s historic district, Natchez-Under-the-Hill. Now known as Silver Street, the area was once a popular hangout for riverboat captains, gamblers, painted ladies, pirates and criminals.

Today, the historic street is home to the oldest bar in town, Under-the-Hill Saloon. The vintage tavern is known for its friendly staff and great views of the Mississippi. There’s even a front porch, perfect for watching the sun set over the famous river.
The Magnolia Grill restaurant is also located on Silver Street. Serving up local favorites, the restaurant has a glassed-in deck that provides breathtaking vistas of the Mighty Mississippi.

At 300 years old, Natchez is one of the state’s oldest cities. It was settled by the French in the 1700s, making it one of the oldest European settlements in the area.
Because of its location, Natchez attracted a great deal of wealthy farmers during the 19th century. The city was once home to more millionaires than any other city in the country. The influx of wealthy residents led to numerous mansions being constructed in Natchez.
Several of these impressive works of architecture from yesteryear are available for touring. A great way to see the city’s historic homes is the Natchez Pilgrimage.
The biannual event includes tours of Melrose, Longwood, Stanton Hall, Rosalie, Linden and many more.

Aside from dozens of antebellum and Victorian-era homes, Natchez’s charming downtown area includes quaint shops and historic landmarks. Hitch a ride in a horse-drawn carriage and tour Natchez’s downtown in an completely unique way.
The quaint town is also home to some beautiful churches. Open for touring, Natchez’s St. Mary Basilica is considered an architectural masterpiece. The charming St. Mary’s Chapel (pictured), which was once part of the Laurel Hill Plantation, is also located in Natchez and is a must-see.
The Natchez Trace Parkway is one of the city’s most popular attractions. The historic trail extends from Natchez to Nashville and is lined with a ton of interesting sites that include everything from Native American villages to the renowned Windsor Ruins.
