Located just south of La Junta, the Picketwire Canyon is a geologic site housed in the beautiful Comanche National Grassland that consists of more than 100 dinosaur track-ways and a whopping 1,500 individual footprints, making it the largest track site for dinosaurs in the United States. As recently as 2014, scientists discovered even more dinosaur tracks in the area, later confirming that there were 90 of them and that they most likely belonged to sauropods. In addition to these well-preserved tracks, Picketwire is also home to dinosaur fossils (which were first discovered in 2001 and compliment the nearby prints); rock art, tools, and pottery from prehistoric peoples; and remains from both early settlers as well as those traveling during the Spanish Expedition. The 11.3-mile trail of dinosaur tracks and dramatic canyon are truly a sight to behold that you will want to share with both your family and friends this summer.

In addition to hiking, visitors have the option to bike or ride horseback during their journey through this Jurassic treasure. For more information on guided tours, fees, and more, visit the USDA’s website.
