Unlike other states where trains criss-cross the landscape helping people get from one corner to another, New Hampshire’s train service might be considered limited. The state itself isn’t a large as some of those with long railroad tracks, but that doesn’t mean we don’t love the idea of a train ride. The good news? Amtrak’s Downeaster, which is often associated only with Maine and getting to Boston, actually does have service in New Hampshire and it’s lovely.

Amtrak's Downeaster train is one if the most scenic and simple ways to see New England.

The entire route goes from Brunswick, Maine heading south ultimately arriving in Boston.

You can imagine that a trip from Maine to Boston must be absolutely gorgeous and the New Hampshire portion does not disappoint. It's beautiful year-round, but the fall offers some seriously special views.

Next it's on to Durham and the University of New Hampshire. This is great for college students, but even those who aren't enrolled will enjoy the ride. The train station is right on campus next to the UNH Dairy Bar Restaurant.

Finally it's off to Exeter. While you won't find much at the station, the downtown shopping area, museums, and Philips-Exeter Academy are within a half-mile.

A ride on the New Hampshire section of the Amtrak Downeaster might not take you all day, but it's a great way to spend some time getting from one place to another. It's also a great way to introduce kids to train travel. It's short so there won't be a lot of time for the novelty to wear off and it feels like a fun adventure to kids who have never experienced a real train ride!
