Finding a new favorite place to dine could be as simple as paying a visit to a modern juke joint in Charlotte known as Leah & Louise. Aside from the innovative Southern-inspired menu, the history of the locale is a another reason to love this eatery. It’s found at Camp North End, which is comprised of 67 acres of repurposed buildings and warehouses whose former lives included a 1924 factory for the Ford Motor Company that would go on to build more than 300,000 Model T and Model A cars in this very spot. Later, the US Army took over the facility and added five more warehouses so this locale could serve as a Quartermaster Depot. Later, during the Cold War, the government would redirect the focus here to building missiles – and this would be from where the name Camp North End was derived, or at least the “camp” part. Camp, or CAMP, was short for “Charlotte Area Missle Plant.”
