Colorado has experienced some insanely cold winter temperatures that have had everyone running indoors and staying there until the thaw, which is exactly what you should do when it freezes. In addition to keeping your human family safe during these cold spells, it is also important to keep your 4-legged friends warm not only for their health but to avoid steep fines and possible jail time:

According to a recent article by 9News, Denver Animal Protection issued a warning to animal owners around the Mile High City stating that cold temperatures are dangerous to both an animal's health and the owner's potential criminal record, thanks to both fines and jail time.

As per 9News, failure to protect animals from the cold is not only detrimental to your pet's health and well-being but can also result in a Cruelty to Animals or Animal Neglect charge on the owner's record, resulting in fines of up to $999 and/or 1 year in jail.

"If pets must be outside for longer durations, Denver city ordinance requires pets have adequate outdoor shelter such as a doghouse, porch area, or a similar structure that allows the animal to escape the elements," shared 9News, adding that "Further insulating the shelter or adding a “doggie door” to a garage or covered area adds another layer of protection from the cold."

In addition to their warning, 9News and the Denver Dumb Friends League also shared several tips for keeping your pets safe during the winter, including the use of a warm and draft-free spot inside your home for animals to rest; to not leave small, short-haired, or very young or old dogs outside without supervision; and to never leave a pet alone in a car during either the cold winter or hot summer.
