Frank Shoemaker Marsh In Nebraska Is Like A Fairytale

Most people don’t realize that a unique ecosystem exists in the area around Lincoln: saline wetlands. These saltwater marshes are some of the most biologically diverse areas in the state, and much of the plant and animal life seen here is not found elsewhere in Nebraska. There are lots of ways to observe this stunning place, but this hike is definitely one of the most beautiful and serene.

Frank Shoemaker marsh is a little-known protected natural area just north of Lincoln. The nature preserve covers 160 acres and contains dozens of species of nesting and shorebirds.

The marsh was named for Frank Shoemaker, an amateur naturalist who had a special love of this saline wetlands area. He spent many days here, observing wildlife and studying the unique ecosystem.

When the city of Lincoln bought the property in 2003, much of the habitat was degraded and in poor shape. A concentrated restoration effort helped to bring back native plants and animals, some of which are endangered or threatened.

You can explore the saline wetlands on a large system of trails, and Frank Shoemaker Marsh has some of the most beautiful trails and overlooks in the region.

Set out on a serene hike through this exceptional natural area and keep your eyes peeled for the plants, birds, and insects that make this place so special. You may spot some flora and fauna that you've never seen before.

A little bridge passes over Little Salt Creek and provides the perfect viewpoint from which to observe the goings-on in the marsh.

Venture out onto one of the two viewing platforms - one of them wheelchair accessible - for some of the most breathtaking views in the entire wetlands.

Be sure to keep your head up and look around as you're walking through. This landscape is endlessly enchanting and deserves to be admired.

Allow plenty of time for your visit; this place is full of so much natural beauty that you'll find yourself entranced.

Be advised that there are ticks here, so wearing long pants and sleeves is advised. Visit Frank Shoemaker Marsh for yourself on the northern outskirts of Lincoln at N 27th St and Bluff Rd. It’s open 24 hours a day and is free to visit.
