The Milock Family Preserve Is A New Michigan Nature Destination

Michigan’s natural attractions often seem endless, which never fails to delight those of us who love the great outdoors. But if you think you’ve seen all that the Great Lakes State has to offer, think again: there’s a brand new nature preserve here in Michigan that’s open for public exploration, and you’ll find so much to enjoy as you make your way through.

The Milock Family Preserve, also known as the Upper Manistee Headwaters, is located off Camp Tapico Rd near the community of Kalkaska.

This breathtaking spot is sprawling, featuring more than 1,200 acres and a variety of unique habitats. The land was previously operated by the Boy Scouts as Camp Tapico.

Now under the ownership of the Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy, the preserve recently opened its bounds for public exploration. It’s easy to unwind when you stop by.

If you’re a fan of hiking, you’ll be happy to find approximately six miles of trails here. These pathways are also suitable for snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and biking.

Check out a 130-acre lake that’s fed by a local spring, explore the Manistee River shoreline, or simply appreciate the greenery that abounds throughout the preserve.

Wildlife enthusiasts will be excited to learn that the Milock Family Preserve is home to everything from bald eagles to turtles, offering ample opportunities to spot animals.

The Milock Family Preserve is open daily from dawn until dusk and visitors are welcome to fish on in the property’s bodies of water, though outside watercraft are prohibited.
