She’ll be coming around the mountain when she comes! Remember that song? If you do, I’ll bet you sang it when you read it.  But forget about her, it’s time for you to take a trip around the mountain- Bear Mountain. As the highest point of elevation in the state, this view is not to be missed. But be warned! You will have to break a serious sweat if you want to make it to the top!

Here’s what you need to do in order to take advantage of this awesome opportunity:

1. Head on over to Salisbury.

Inside this small town (population roughly 4,000) at the westernmost corner of the state, is Mount Riga State Park. The 276-acre space is home to Bear Mountain.
2. Choose a trail.

It's been suggested that Under Mountain Trail is the best trail at Bear Mountain but I'm not entirely convinced. While this path is shorter and more popular, starting at Lion's Head is less strenuous.
3. Be prepared.

As you can see, the trails are just up and up. You should definitely bring lots of water and a power bar or two.
4. Think about how it will feel to conquer this.

Full disclosure, Bear Mountain is the tallest peak, but not necessarily the tallest spot. This shot was taken from Round Mountain, whose flat top is higher (but still in Connecticut).

5. Breathe in the fresh air.

The air is better at the top! Take a minute to close your eyes and embrace the sun. Unless you burn easily. In that case, just keep moving.
6. Touch the moss.

That's right. There's a little waterfall, too. Some people have attempted tricky maneuvers here. But I wouldn't risk it. Touch the moss, wet your neck, and keep moving.
7. See the cairn.

This stack of rocks is massive. I know rock stacking doesn't seem so impressive to local nutmeggers since you can find these on people's properties, but this one is really, really tall.
8. Look back at what you've conquered.

After a five mile trail, you deserve a pat on the back and arguably a cupcake. But you'll be so hyped all you'll want to do is start jumping up and down.
9. Enjoy the view.
