It's the kind of place that's meant to elicit shrieks of joy and excitement, and when those voices are silenced forever, a strange pall is cast over the forgotten space. The famed tourist town of Gatlinburg, Tennessee has a forgotten place of its own, tucked away from sight.

Fun Mountain Theme Park was plagued with financial troubles from its opening in the 1990s. After a final difficult season, it shut down officially in 2000. From its closure through 2008, the park simply sat forgotten.

Folks would travel to the eerily empty space and take photos of the ghostly rides for years. Eventually, a majority of them were sold at auction to collectors from across the nation.

The chairlift that used to regale visitors with views from high in the mountains was halted and slowly eaten up by the lush natural spaces around the area. Before the park was dismantled for good, there were forgotten bumper cars, a carousel, and a Ferris wheel.

Still, the memory of what once was remains. The famed Mountain View Hotel used to sit on the property at became Fun Mountain. This photo was taken years ago, in 1963, years before the theme park was constructed. It seems like the land was always meant to be an escape for guests, but it remained unsuccessful.
