Many of these beautiful places have flown under the radar of non-Idahoans for a long time, but there’s one destination that was recently named one of the most beautiful places in the entire country by a prominent magazine. We have to say, we agree with their decision to include this breathtaking landscape on their list! Country Living specifically named the Palouse region as "America's Most Beautiful Hills", and we agree! Although the Palouse stretches across three states (Idaho, Washington, and Oregon), it's definitely nice to see a Gem State landscape get some well-deserved nationwide attention.
Comprised of gentle rolling hills that seem to go on forever, the Palouse's awe-inspiring scenery is simply unparalleled. It's truly unlike any other landscape you've seen before, and that's because the way these hills were formed is extremely unique.
Typically, hills are carved by water from streams and rivers. However, that was not the case with the Palouse's iconic hills. Similar to sand dunes, these hills were formed from wind-blown dust and silt that is called "loess" over tens of thousands of years.
However, the Palouse is much more than a pretty sight. It's also one of the world's richest agricultural regions. The area's mild winters, wet springs, and dry summers make it perfect for growing crops. In fact, the Palouse is the world's leader when it comes to the production of soft white winter wheat.
You'll find Idaho's portion of the Palouse in Latah County. Depending on what season you visit the area, you'll witness a landscape dominated by either lush green grass or golden fields of wheat. To explore, simply hop on one of the back roads and relax as this inspiring region surrounds you.
