Experience Long Pond Woods, A Jungle-Like Area Of Rhode Island

Once the weather warms up and the foliage starts to come in, Rhode Island just blossoms with beauty. While the Ocean State is far from the tropics, there are places where it feels like a tropical forest has invaded the hiking trails. There is one jungle-like area that you’ll want to check out for yourself this spring, and you’re going to love it.

Long Pond Woods Wildlife Refuge is a stunning 220-acre Rhode Island Audubon Society property. The two miles of trails offer a unique journey through the preserve where you'll feel like you've entered another world.

The Long Pond Woods Trail is rated moderate to difficult with changes in elevation and some rock scrambles that can be challenging. Lace up your hiking boots and get ready for an adventure!

The trail borders both Long and Ell Ponds but before you get to the scenic water views, you have some ground to cover.

Travel the boardwalk to cross low-lying wetlands. The dense green foliage will make you feel as though you're making your way through a jungle.

Make your way through beautiful groves of rhododendron trees with their twisting trunks. Find also mountain laurel that bursts into fragrant blooms each year.

As you continue on through the preserve, you'll encounter a staircase set into the hill. Climb upwards to continue on this ethereal trip through the forest.

Encounter huge boulder formations dispersed throughout the property. There's something new to see with every turn of the trail.

Scurry up the rock trail for an added challenge. While it's not the easiest path, even young kids can handle it with a little help.

When you reach the pond overlook, you'll find the perfect spot to take a little break. Enjoy the fantastic view before heading back down the trail.

Long Pond Woods Wildlife Refuge is located on North Road in Rockville. The area is open sunrise to sunset.
