For generations, families across America have been reading the stories of Laura Ingalls Wilder and her life in a Little House on the Prairie. Lucky for us South Dakotans, that little house is right here on the SoDak prairie and is arguably the most famous homestead in America:
Located in the small town of De Smet is, of course, the Ingalls Homestead.
"At Ingalls Homestead, we like Laura," state the folks running the museum, going on to say "But most of all we like helping all our visitors have some fun while they learn about Laura, and history, and agriculture."
What can you see and do at the Ingalls Homestead? We are glad you asked! For starters, you can try your hand at chores like laundry, hay twisting, and wheat grinding...
...make your own corn cob dolls and jumprope...
...covered wagon rides, and the opportunity to drive a pony cart.
In addition to the activities on the land, visitors can also camp at the Ingalls Homestead, thanks to rentable covered wagons, RV sites, tent camping, and bunkhouses.
There is so much to see and do around this iconic homestead, so be sure to plan for at least a half a day to take it all in!
The Ingalls Homestead is located at 20812 Homestead Rd in De Smet and is open every day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
