The state of Kentucky has been an explorer’s paradise for centuries with a diverse landscape that includes mountains, gently rolling hills, gorges, waterfalls, lakes, rivers, and creeks. More and more of Kentucky’s natural beauty has been transformed over the years, but there are still plenty of places to discover in the Bluegrass State. One particular hidden gem, located just outside of Somerset, has been a favorite natural oasis for generations. The mesmerizing Short Creek is often referred to as the shortest creek in the world, but this little creek makes up for its size with its pure nature, beautiful setting, and stunning scenery that make up this magical place in Kentucky.
Located just outside of the city of Somerset in the town of Stab, Kentucky is the beautiful and historic Short Creek.
This picturesque creek is located on private property, however, the owners have very graciously allowed visitors to experience the creek and surrounding area. You are not allowed to camp, build a fire, or rappel from the cliff, but you can enjoy a picnic, take photos and hike around this incredible destination.
Short Creek is often called the shortest creek in the world, as it only flows for about 150 feet.
It's actually a portion of an underground river that comes up above the ground in this small section that lies between two caves. When you walk up to the creek, which is just off Kentucky Highway 80 in eastern Pulaski County, you'll wonder how the entire state doesn't already know about this stunning natural oasis.
That temperature means that Short Creek is a great spot to cool off on a hot summer day and is still a beautiful place to visit in the winter. In fact, throughout history, this creek was often used for baptisms. There was even a grist mill on the property for many years. It seems many people throughout time have discovered the beauty and purpose of this little creek and the surrounding area.

Along with the bubbling creek and blue water, there is also a unique cave to explore.
It's actually a fairly accessible cave, but you should of course always exercise caution. And as this is private property and a naturally pristine place, visitors should always show the utmost respect for the creek and the nature surrounding it. It's crucial that we all work to keep this historic spot just as magical for generations to come.
There's no better way to describe Short Creek than as simply magical.
Tucked away in Pulaski County, it's a geological wonder and a beautiful place to visit any time of year.
