Texline is a town of just over 500 that serves as a gateway to New Mexico, making it a place that most people just pass through without a second thought. This tiny blip on the map is actually an extremely important spot in Texas, and it deserves much more attention than it gets.
As soon as you exit Texline, you've not only crossed into another city, but another county, state, and time zone! That's right - you'll save an hour upon entering New Mexico due to the switch from Central to Mountain time.
Time travel isn't the only mystical thing about this area, either. Crazy, unpredictable weather has also been reported countless times. Everything from thunderstorms appearing out of nowhere to drastic temperature drops accompanied by snow covering the highway has happened here...and nobody knows exactly why.
Texline has quite an interesting history. Since it's located directly near the state border up in the Panhandle, it was involved in an early 1900s dispute regarding the boundary lines that were set at the 100th and 103rd meridian back in 1859.
After oil was discovered in the region, New Mexico insisted that the original surveyors were mistaken in their calculations so that they could reap the revenue instead of Texas. However, the Supreme Court ended up ruling in our favor and no state lines had to be moved.
Another fun fact about Texline is that it's further from its state capital than any other state in the lower U.S.! So next time you pass through the town, don't just blink and miss it. It's a lot more interesting of a place than you ever would've guessed!
