Movie theater experiences vary from old fashioned, restored theaters to newer theaters with groundbreaking technology. All of these theaters offer more than just your run-of-the-mill soda and popcorn variety. However, there are many unique, beautiful theaters that perhaps once showed films, but now are more like playhouses. For this list, I only included theaters who show movies predominantly. A few of them are part of chains, but there are also a few that are unique and housed in historic buildings.
I am also aware that most of these are found in large cities, particularly St. Louis and Kansas City. Most of the unique theaters in smaller locations had gone the way of playhouses as mentioned previously, and drive-ins were also not included, but a couple of them were mentioned in our previous article about Retro Places.

Housed in a refurbished and remodeled former Shriner’s temple, the Moolah is located at 3821 Lindell Boulevard and is a truly unique movie-going experience. Enjoy watching the giant screen in comfy loveseats, or from a seat in the full balcony or stadium seating. Besides the main theater, the Moolah also features a bar and lounge showing old VHS films, and an eight-lane retro-style bowling alley with pool tables, video games and a grill. If you love the building, you can rent one of their 42 lofts, which run from between $700 to $2100 per month. Located at 1400 Main Street, this theater opened in 2012 and features dinner, drinks, movies and snacks. They have special events such as Quote-Along nights, and Girlie nights. Entertainment Weekly named the Alamo the #1 theater in America and Wireless.com named it the "coolest movie theater in the world." One of several AMC Dine-In Theaters, this location is at 12657 Olive Street in Creve Couer. They feature MacGuffin’s Bar and Lounge, and Fork & Screen, in which food is brought to your seat. Cinema Suites for those over 21 feature reserved, luxury recliners and in theater dining. They also have Sensory Friendly Films, through partnership with the Autism Society during which lights are up and the sound is down, and talking and moving around the theater is allowed. This theater is housed in the historic 1914 Union Station at 30 West Pershing Road in Kansas City, and after a 2013 renovation, features the biggest screen in the region and amazing 3D. Another AMC Theater located at 8600 Ward Parkway, Suite 14 in Kansas City is the AMC Ward Parkway 14. Besides Coke Freestyle, this theater also features hot food, and plush recliners, as well as giant aisles. It only costs $5.50 for matinees which is a great deal for the experience, but get there early, word has spread since its renovation a few years ago and it’s very popular. This theater, located at 450 THF Boulevard in Chesterfield is part of the Wehrenberg Theater chain with locations throughout Missouri and in Illinois, Iowa and Minnesota. They have a Mega Screen that is 70 feet long, as well as a Five Star Lounge for those over 21 featuring plush, heated luxury recliners, table-side service from an on-call wait staff, full food and cocktail menus and reserved seating. This theater is part of B&B Theaters, with many locations not only in Missouri, but also Arkansas, Arizona, Florida, Kansas, Mississippi, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Kansas. This theater, located at 16820 Main Street in Wildwood features 10 screens including two over-21 auditoriums called "The Marquee Suites" with a joining lobby with full bar and food menu, and pairs of recliners connected by a table top. MX Movies is part of downtown St. Louis’ Merchantile Exchange District and is located at 618 Washington Avenue, Suite 201. It is a three-screen dine-in theater and features a full bar and restaurant, ordering and paying from seat technology, and a café and lounge featuring local microbrews. Another Wehrenberg Theater located at 1300 Barred Owl Lane in Lake Ozark, they feature leather, high-backed rocking seats with moveable arm rests. Located at 6350 Delmar Boulevard in The Loop in a 1920’s building listed in the National Register of Historic Places. They experienced a major renovation and opened in 1995 as a theater specializing in independent and foreign language films. The Go! List in St. Louis Dispatch named it Reader’s Choice for Best Movie Theater and Best Place to See an Arthouse Movie. Beer and wine are available at the concession stand but they also have the Tivoli Bar with a full food and drink menu, Schlafly seasonal products, and special events and giveaways.
