While the national parks in Wyoming draw most of the attention, there are other lesser known parks that hold treasures of their own. In fact, there’s something quite unusual going on at this one particular park. That’s why this hidden park will make you feel like you’ve discovered Wyoming’s best kept secret.
Sinks Canyon State Park is located 6 miles southwest of Lander off of Wyoming Highway 131. It's nestled at the base of the southern Wind River Mountains along the eastern slope.
The canyon is named for a unique geologic formation known as "The Sinks." This is where things begin to go awry.

The "Sinks" is a large cavern where the water from the Popo Agie River flows into the cracks and crevices of the cavern.

Then, for no rhyme or reason, the water completely disappears underground.
So where does it go?
Then, out of nowhere, the river reappears one quarter of a mile down the canyon in a large pool known as "The Rise."
If the water completely disappearing isn't odd enough, the fact that it takes the water over 2 hours to make the journey makes it even more unsettling. More water comes out than goes in and the water comes out warmer than it went in.

If you really want to immerse yourself in nature, there are also RV and tent sites available.
There are 7 or 8 easy to moderate hiking trails that range anywhere from 1/2 mile to 4 miles.
The Middle Fork Falls Trail is a great path for horseback riding as well.
Climbing is another popular activity in the park. The limestone, sandstone and granite cliff faces are a climber's paradise.
To really cover some ground, check out "The Loop Road." It's a 70 mile scenic drive that winds through Sinks Canyon.
