Summer is short in the mountains of Wyoming — there are only two or three months of snowless hiking, where you only have to worry about bears, bison, and wind. If you’re trying to see the best of the Cowboy State, try camping out in one underrated scenic campground that’s truly one of a kind. The Wapiti Campground between Yellowstone and Cody is one of the nicest places in the state to lay your head.
The Wapiti Valley is one of Wyoming's most underrated regions, and staying at the Wapiti Campground right on the cusp of mountain and valley is a one-of-a-kind way to see this gorgeous spot.
If you prefer the primitive way of staying outdoors, bring your tent! Every site offers a picnic table, fire ring, and bear box, so there's not much to worry about even though you're away out in the woods.
You'll find plenty of things to do nearby — visit the Pahaska Tepee, try fly fishing or kayaking in the Shoshone, or hiking through miles of trails to experience the wilderness up close.
The Buffalo Bill Center of the West is one of the coolest museums in Wyoming, and it's only half an hour from the campground. Here, you'll find all sorts of artifacts from Wyoming's early days and the American West.
