There’s Something Incredibly Bizarre About This One Wisconsin Beach

People visit the Apostle Islands because they are just gorgeous. But you might not know that Julian Bay Beach, on Stockton Island, has a really interesting feature. It is home to something called “barking sand.” Sand barks? Yeah, we never heard of it, either. Apparently, it takes the right kind of conditions and the right kind of sand. This particular beach on this particular island has this feature. So what exactly is barking sand? Well, the barking is a sound that is caused by wind passing over the sand. Sometimes the sound is more of a whistling, sometimes it is more of a howl. It is simply incredible, and we can’t wait to get up there and see what it is like first hand. Here are some pictures of the beach where this phenomenon occurs:

And here is a great video showing you what this phenomenon sounds like. Wow. We can’t wait to see it in person, but this is a great teaser.

Have you ever been to Stockton Island? Did the sand bark for you?
