If you’ve spent much time in Logan County, West Virginia, you’ve probably heard the ghost story of Mamie Thurman.

Local legend says Mamie haunts the area around 22 Mine Road near Holden in Logan County. Thurman, the wife of patrolman Jack Thurman, was murdered on June 21, 1932, when she was 32 years old.

A local boy found her body in a patch of blackberries along the road. Her throat had been slashed from ear to ear and she had been shot twice in the left side of her head. Her jewelry and purse were found nearby so the death was not believed to be a robbery.

Eventually a handyman was convicted of the killing. Her final resting place and whether the man convicted of her murdered actually did it remain a mystery to this day. Mamie, in addition to being a local legend, has been the subject of plays, books and ghost stories.

People say if you drive your car on a hill near where she was found, you can put the vehicle in neutral and it will roll uphill. They say that's the spirit of Mamie pushing the car up the hill.
