There’s no doubt about it, Virginians are some of the best people you’ll ever meet. From our Southern hospitality to our significant contributions in the worlds of science, politics, arts and culture, we have a lot to offer. But those things not withstanding, there are many, many reasons why Virginians are the best. And while I might be just a little biased, here are a few of them…
1. We know that manners matter.
It's just how we were raised.
2. We go out of our way to lend a helping hand.
In February 2015, Tommy Adams from Crewe set an example for all of us when he stops to help an elderly man shovel snow. The 17-year old high school senior made it to the national news after his photo and story went viral.
3. And we're always there for one another when it counts.
After the 2007 tragedy at Virginia Tech, even their long time rivals at the University of Virginia stood with them in solidarity.
3. We never say no to an adventure.
4. We acknowledge our past.
A reenactment in the slave quarters at the Booker T. Washington National Monument in Franklin County.
5. And always try to learn from it.
The Civil Rights' Monument on the State Capitol Grounds in Richmond.
6. We know how to appreciate natural beauty.
At Raven's Roost on the Blue Ridge Parkway
Wherever it appears.
A double rainbow over Arlington.
7. We know how to stay young at heart.
This young fella' is getting his groove on at a summer concert series in Newport News.
8. We know how to have a good laugh.
Foamhenge, an exact replica of Stonehenge made entirely from styrofaom, began as a April Fool's joke by local artist, Mark Cline, but is now a state landmark. Ok, maybe not an OFFICIAL state landmark, but a Virginia classic all the same.
9. We know that family comes first.
Because they're the ones that will always pick you up when you're down.
10. We support our troops - because they support us.
Virginia National Guard troops from Emporia's 1710th Transportation Company return home in 2014 after 8 months in Afghanistan.
11. We're creative.
Street Art in downtown Richmond.
12. And innovative.
A rocket launch at the NASA's Wallop's Island Flight Facility.
13. And only have a slight superhero complex.
It's kind of hard not to when you're from the best state in the nation.
14. We believe in pushing the limits. Literally.
The edge of Stony Cliff at Stony Man along Skyline Drive.
15. But most of all, we have a WHOLE lotta love.
The state slogan, “Virginia is for Lovers”, was adopted in 1969, and while it’s one of the most well-known state slogans in the country, to Virginians its simple. We love our home state – and all that it stands for.
