It’s been 17 years since that unmistakable droning was the soundtrack to a Virginian summer, and 2016 is the year they return. This particular kind, known as brood V, is expected to make quite a buzz in more ways than one. Some kinds of cicadas emerge annually, but it’s these periodic cicadas that are the most noticeable. Experts predict the northwestern portion of the state to be the most affected.
