What Scientists Are Doing In This Remote Area Of Utah Is Truly Awesome

In the movie, “The Martian” (currently at a Utah theater near you), Matt Damon has to live in a “Hab” on Mars while he waits for the humans on earth to rescue him. Every time he has to go outside, he has to wear his space suit, and life on Mars is generally pretty tough. Luckily for him, he has lots of NASA training and months of living on the planet when he gets stranded.

The movie is pure fiction, but scientists really do dream of living on Mars and studying the planet. It’s the closest planet with the potential for human habitation. But first, we need to learn how to navigate the planet, and the best way to do so is by re-creating the environment as closely as possible. The Mars Society decided that the San Rafael Swell, near Hanksville, Utah was a pretty close representation of Mars.
