Monowi, Nebraska is the smallest incorporated town in America. It has a population of just one person.

This peculiar town was established in 1902 and peaked in population during the 1930s when it was home to about 150 residents. As the years passed, young people moved to larger cities and older residents died off.

By 2000, Monowi was home to a single married couple, Rudy and Elsie Eiler. Rudy died in 2004, making Elsie Eiler the sole resident of Monowi.

The town is also home the 5,000-volume Rudy’s Library, founded by Elsie in memory of her late husband.

The town has four street lights, and Eiler is required to create a municipal road plan each year.

It’s unclear what will happen to Monowi when Eiler dies. For now, the little town is a curiosity worth visiting.
