Most People Don't Know There's A Little Statue Of Liberty Hiding In South Carolina

Did you know we have our very own little Statue of Liberty here in South Carolina? The icon in New York’s harbor on Liberty Island quickly became a symbol of freedom after she arrived in the U.S. from France. And while this little version here in the Palmetto State stands for the same, it also has an additional resounding meaning that you’re going to love.

Just as the original Lady Liberty stood for freedom, the little version does too. Perhaps it's the occasion for which it made its way to South Carolina that makes it extra special.

Our little Lady of Exile stands at just 8.5 feet tall, not including her concrete base, and weighs an estimated 300 pounds. She was placed here in 1950 by the Boy Scouts of America to mark their 40th anniversary. While the big gal in New York was made in France, this one was made in America in Chicago.

She was one of 200 the Boy Scouts purchased and placed in locations throughout the U.S. to mark their 40th anniversary — and she's the only one in South Carolina on record. Luckily, a visit to little Lady Liberty doesn't require any boat rides. She stands tall in a small park near USC and you can visit any time you like.

While you’re in Columbia, you should also visit another roadside attraction. This one is much more whimsical than little Lady Liberty.
