Olneyville New York System in Providence is credited for creating the first hot wiener joint. Since its beginning this tasty food item has only grown in popularity.
3. The Diner
The first diner was born in 1872. A Rhode Islander by the name of Walter Scott invented a horse drawn restaurant sparking this popular American tradition. Haven Bros. continues this great work and is found parked in Providence near City Hall.
4. Pizza Strips
Although you can find amazing hot pizza slices all over Rhode Island, many still love fresh and cold bakery pizza. This is definitely a Rhode Island tradition that will continue to live on.
5. The Fast Break Play
This legendary and widely used basketball play has its origins in Rhode Island. This move consists of a team gaining control of the ball and moving it up court as quickly as they can to reach a scoring position.
6. Glee Gum
This popular natural gum alternative was created in Rhode Island. It continues to be headquartered in Providence.
7. The Sprinkler System
While other earlier versions of sprinklers were still being developed, a Rhode Islander by the name of Frederick Grinnell is responsible for the system that we know today.
Former Governor and War General Ambrose Burnside is credited for introducing this hair style. While his style was unique for the time, it certainly has taken off since the 1800s!
9. Johnny Cakes

10. Mr. Potato Head
Not everyone knows that the Hasbro headquarters is located right here in Little Rhody. That means that well loved classics like Mr. Potato are in fact fellow Rhode Islanders.
