South of the Border

South of the Border is a taste of Mexico in South Carolina. Just off I-95 you’ll find funky motel accommodations, a Mexican restaurant and diner, shops, an outdoor pool, a sauna and campsite. But that’s not all, there’s also an amusement park, a reptile house and the landmark 200 ft. sombrero shaped observation tower. It was originally built in 1949 by Alan Schafer as a beer stand and border beer depot. Over the years it grew into what it is today.

If you’re from SC or NC there’s no doubt you’ve stopped at South of the Border at least once. I mean, you really can’t miss it. South of the Border is a beloved tourist attraction for its funky, unique concept.
