Here we go…let’s go…go ball, get…if you can end any or all of those three phrases, you’re most certainly a Pittsburgher. And, that’s a pretty awesome thing when you think about it. Most of us have traveled far from home, only to inevitably run into our fellow Pittsburghers. Here’s just how to always spot someone from Pittsburgh:
1. Yinz from Pittsburgh n'at?
Pittsburgh has a language all of its own. Let's go dahntahn to see the Stillers 'n at after we stop at Jine Iggle. If you understood that, congratulations! You speak, or at least can interpret, Pittsburghese!
2. Pittsburghers live 20 minutes – not miles – from anywhere.
We tell distance in time, not mileage. It takes 20 minutes to get from Plum to downtown on a good day. Makes sense, huh?
3. Put fries on my salad - and sandwich!
Fries aren't a secondhand thought in Pittsburgh, relegated to the menu as a side. Fries are part of the main show – topping salads and sandwiches in the Burgh.
4. Pittsburghers bleed black and gold.
No matter where Pittsburghers wander in the world, many show their hometown pride by sporting
Steelers jackets, Pens jerseys, Buccos t-shirts and even some pretty awesome tattoos.
5. We drink pop.
What do you mean soda? Pop just naturally rolls off of our tongues. You're sure to give yourself away as a non-Pittsburgher if you order a soda.
6. Below zero? Pshaw!
Cold weather scare us? Surely you jest. Our grandparents and great-grandparents trekked miles to school in waist-deep snow. We can handle the snow and the cold – and many of us will wear shorts and a sweatshirt on those cold winter days or as the summer's pages turn to fall.
7. MY parking spot!
Uh-huh, no way will you steal that parking spot we worked so hard to clear of that heavy snow. Pittsburghers rightfully claim their parking spots with chairs.
8. Got Heinz Ketchup and Mustard?
Forget French's and Hunt. Heinz claims Pittsburgh as its birthplace so that's what Pittsburgher's top their favorite foods with – Heinz ketchup and mustard. Nothing else really compares.
9. We're friendly!
Most Pittsburghers just naturally like to chat so strike up a conversation. Be forewarned, however, that claiming status as a Ravens or a Tom Brady fan may just get you, well, a look of dismay.
10. Pittsburghers always lend a helping hand.
When it comes down to it, Pittsburghers are a friendly bunch who always help out when the call goes out. Whether it's lining the streets to honor fallen firefighters or police officers or raising money and supplies for a family who lost their home in a fire, Pittsburghers always come through.
