Pittsburghers just stand out. Maybe it’s the Steelers, Pirates, or Pens gear. Or perhaps it’s just the genuine friendliness in conversations dripping with Pittsburghese. Somehow people can always tell a Pittsburgher when they see one, then questions start coming. Have you ever been asked any of these nine questions people ask when you’re from Pittsburgh?
1. So, are you a Steelers fan?
We've got three pretty amazing professional sports teams – the Steelers, the Pens, and the Bucs – but Pittsburgh just seems to be synonymous with the Steelers, right? So, it's only natural that we be asked if we're Steelers fans.
2. Do you really hate Philly fans?
Hate? No way. Make no mistake, however, that there sure is an intense interstate rivalry between Pittsburgh and Philly sports fans. But, Pittsburghers know when it comes down to it, records speak louder than words and the Steelers with their six NFL Super Bowl Wins, the Pirates with their five World Series wins, and the Pens with their three Stanley Cup wins all lead the Eagles, the Phillies, and the Flyers in championship wins.
3. What's up with that accent?
Accent? Surely, you jest. We might not hear it when we talk, but most people can immediately tell we're from Pittsburgh because of Pittsburghese. Yinz. Nebby. Dahntahn. Gumbands. Jumbo. Chipped ham.
4. Do you really put fries on your sandwiches?
Pittsburgh really does know how to stand out from the crowd. We sure do put fries on sandwiches, and if you haven't tried fries on your sandwich or on your salad at least once in your life, you have no idea what you're missing.
5. Isn't Pittsburgh dirty?
The steel mill days – and with them the sooty air – have earned their place in history books, but 21st century Pittsburgh is on a cleaner path toward the future.
6. How long does it take to get to Philly from the Burgh?
Most non-Pennsylvanians don't realize that Pittsburgh and Philly are at opposite ends of the state and might be surprised at your answer, which really depends on another question: How fast do you drive?
7. Did you graduate from Pitt or Penn State?
Some people simply seem to think that if you live in Pittsburgh you've gone to either Pitt or Penn State. No other colleges and universities seem to pop up in the conversation.
8. Hey, isn't (FILL IN THE BLANK) from Pittsburgh?
How many times have you met someone and as soon as they realize you're from Pittsburgh they ask isn't Mister Rogers from Pittsburgh? Michael Keaton? Joe Manganiello? (Add your favorite famous Pittsburgher's name here).
9. Um...what's pop?
Okay, you might get that question when you order a pop in a part of the country, like southern Virginia, where that delightful caffeinated drink is referred to as “soda,” but use it in places where pop is common, like Illinois, and you won't give away your Pittsburgh roots so easily.
