The Butler Freeport Community Trail, a rail trail, spans 21 miles and appeals to both hikers and bikers. A dozen trail heads make it easy to hike part or all of the scenic trail.

A popular trail since 1989, the Butler Freeport Community Trail will take you along Little Buffalo Creek, Buffalo Creek, and the Allegheny River.

Hikers and bikers typically rate the trail as easy due in part to the trail's surfaces, which include asphalt, dirt, and crushed limestone. Even better, the trail is predominately flat.

Engage in a number of activities as you make your way along the trail. Geocaching, for example, is popular with some hikers and bikers. Search for some of the more than 40 hidden treasures along the trail.

Keep an eye out for local wildlife, like the adorable little raccoons pictured below. If you feel like bird watching, you just might spot such birds as scarlet tanagers and herons.

Buffalo Creek also beckons those who love to fish. Sit along the creek and fish or simply just admire the view, if you want to take a breather from your hike.

Along with waterfalls, you'll likely spot fields of wildflowers, especially in the spring and in mid-summer.

Both dogs and horses are allowed on the Butler Freeport Community Trail. However, those who bring their animals will be expected to clean up after them. (Dogs must remain on a leash.)
