I’m sure you can remember a few times in your life when your surroundings stopped you dead in your tracks. Awesome natural landscapes do that to us; they make us stop and stare. Pennsylvania is home to plenty of these wonders, be it mountains, lakes, forests, or fields. Here are some of the most enchanting spots in Pennsylvania that you might not have seen before.
1. Baughman's Rock, Ohiopyle State Park
The legend of Baughman's Rock states that in spring of the year 1849, a hunter and his two sons were walking along the ridge when the father struck one of his sons in a fit of anger. The son never awoke, and the father, Henry Baughman, hid his body in the rock's crevice. The man served 11 years in prison, and years later the remains of his son's body were found. Today the spot is peaceful, despite its creepy past.
2. Long Arm Dam, Hanover
If you're from the Hanover area, you may know the Lawrence Baker Sheppard Reservoir as a pleasant place to fish. The calm waters are a source of water for Hanover Borough.
3. Lock Ridge Park, Alburtis
This park is built around an old iron ore blast furnace in the Lehigh Valley. It is not only a beautiful destination, but one full of local history. The park includes a museum, a little league baseball field, and a stream where you can fish.
4. Weathering Knob, Blue Mountain, Northampton County
Pennsylvania is home to a ton of mountains. This one is located along the Appalachian Trail, east of Little Gap. The view here is of Mahoning Valley.
5. Frazier Covered Bridge, Moreland Township
Pennsylvania has more covered bridges than any other state in the country, laying claim to 197 of the less than 900 that remain. This charming covered bridge was built in 1888.
6. Columcille Megalith Park, Bangor
It is a place of peace and tranquility. Columcille Megalith Park was established with ancient Celtic spirituality in mind. Come here to contemplate or to clear your mind.
7. Pool Wildlands Conservancy, Emmaus
This nonprofit organization in the Lehigh Valley is dedicated to conservation of nature. Here, you will find educational environmental programming, wildlife rescue, and miles of serene hiking trails through the woods.
8. Ridley Creek State Park, Newtown Square
Ridley Creek State Park is located about 16 miles outside of Philadelphia-- just far enough away to escape the urban hubbub. Along with plenty of enchanting natural panoramas, like the one above, the park includes the Colonial Pennsylvania Plantation, which is a living museum.
